Applied Epic Dashboards: Principal/Owner

Applied Epic Dashboards for Principals and Owners

As we continue our Applied Epic Dashboard blog series, it’s time to cover the various dashboards available to any individual with the principal/owner role. After all, it’s critical for you as a Principal or Owner to be able to view all the key data surrounding your agency’s performance, health, sales pipeline, and carrier relationships.

But before we jump into which dashboards are available to Principals/Owners, let’s review a couple of reminders.

Notes about Applied Epic Dashboards and the Principal/Owner Dashboards

Access to Epic Dashboards is determined by your current Epic package. It is available in the Premium and Professional packages. You also have access to them if you currently have access to Applied Analytics. If you have a Pro/Premium bundle, anyone with an Applied Community Login can opt-in to request access. For additional information, refer to our Applied Epic Dashboards Introduction blog.

Once an individual is given the Principal/Owner role, they can now view this role-specific set of dashboards, in addition to inheriting all other dashboards available to agency personnel. (To learn more about those dashboards, check out the bottom of this article, where you’ll find links to those other 5 blogs.) While the Principal/Owner dashboards are more summary or trend driven, having access to drill down into the modules or into other roles’ dashboards allows for further analysis and discovery.

For Policies and Clients to be included in these dashboards as current/active business, the policies must have an expiration date not earlier than the selected month and the last service summary row that is not cancelled and is in a Submitted, Issued, or Migrated Service Stage.

Agency Health

Agency Health Dashboard Example 1
Agency Health Dashboard Example 2

On the Agency Health dashboard, the Principal/Owner views agency’s overall performance around Total Commission or Premium, Client count by Commission or Premium Size, and Commission/Premium Change and/or Retention by Branch, Department, or NAIC/SIC code. Use the criteria fields to set your time period, structure combination, Monetary Option (estimated, annualized, or billed), Premium or Commission, and NAICS or SIC code options. You can also set the filter to show specific client code information.

Book of Business Trends

Book of Business Trends DB Example 1
Book of Business Trends DB Example 2

The Book of Business Trends Dashboard allows an agency Principal/Owner to see changes in the overall book of business. Set the criteria between two dates (the above example screenshot shows March 2024 through March 2025). Then, click on the points on the graph to obtain a snapshot of what your book looked like during that time frame.

This dashboard has three graphs: monetary, policy count, and client count. You may notice that one graph may stay relatively the same, while others go up or down. For example, the number of policies may remain the same, but the value of the active policies goes up. You can also select the monetary option to show estimated, annualized, or billed. Those values can also appear as premium or commission, depending on which you choose.

Carrier Overview

Principal/Owner Carrier Overview Dashboard

The Carrier Overview dashboard allows you to analyze:

  • Your premium by carrier and status.
  • Premium change by carrier on the current renewed policies.
  • The marketing efforts and hit rate by carrier for your top 7 carriers from the marketing module side of policies.

You’ll set your Period Selector, Monetary Option, and ICO or PPE to display results. Other filters include Structure, Type of Business, specific ICO, PPE, or client codes. To further analyze your data, you can filter based on the following:

  • The policies stage (Entered, In Process, N/A, Not Written, Issued, Submitted or Written)
  • Action (Quote, Decline, New or Remarket)
  • Policy Status (Renew, Rewrite or New)

This data could be helpful with carrier/broker contract negotiations or appointments.

Carrier Trends

Principal/Owner Dashboard for Carrier Trends

Data found in the Carrier Overview dashboard can indicate if there is growth or reduction with your top 7 carriers. This can be helpful to determine if your agency is placing business with small regional carriers, large national carriers, or a mix between the two.

The 3 Carrier Trends charts show trends for:

  • Premium/Revenue by Carrier: Total of the Monetary Value (Premium or Commission) for the date range selected. This information comes from policy and line detail.
    • Total = New + Rewritten + (Renewed – Rewritten)
  • Hit Rate by Carrier: Shows the 7 carriers with the highest hit rate from the marketed policies area.
    • Hit Rate = Carrier Written / Carrier Submissions
  • Average Premium/Revenue: Shows the Average Monetary Value (Premium or Commission) per carrier for the date range selected. This information comes from policy and line detail.
    • Average = New + Rewritten + (Renewed – Rewritten)/ Unique Carriers with New, Rewritten and/or Renewed policies

Claim Trends

Principal/Owner Dashboard for Claim Trends

The Claim Trends dashboard enables owners to review agency’s claim data during a given period. There are 4 graphs within the dashboard to review: Claim Type, Client Count, Carrier, and Paid Amount. From these graphs, you can better understand the impact of claims on your agency’s performance.

Client Map

Principal/Owner Epic Dashboard Client Map

Similar to the Risk Map, the Client Map shows the geographical distribution of your agency’s clients. This view helps you plan visits efficiently or make marketing decisions for underrepresented areas. Hovering over the pins on the map highlights the number of clients and number of policies you have active in that area.

Clicking on the blue hyperlinked account name will take you directly to the client’s account.

Commission by Type of Business

Epic Dashboard for Principal Owner - Commission by Type of Business

To quickly view your agency’s overall billed commission, check out the Commission by Type of Business dashboard. With the ability to view total commission by account type (P&C, Benefits, or a mix of both), this dashboard provides insight into who your largest commissionable clients are.

The commission totals include clients with current active policies as of the accounting month selected. It also pulls the data from the Policy and Line detail of a policy application. Clicking on the hyperlinks of each client takes you directly to that account for further review as needed.

Data Quality

Data Quality Dashboard for Principal/Owner

The Data Quality dashboard supplies quick insight into data quality issues that could be skewing various reporting elements found in the Principal/Owner Dashboards. Adjust your policy effective and/or expiration dates to see the following:

  • Lines in effect with invalid companies: The count and percentage of policies in effect with invalid, inactive, or blank issuing companies. This populates from the Policy/Line Detail.
  • Expired policies not renewed or cancelled: The count and percentage of policies past their expiration date, which have not been renewed. This also populates from the Policy/Line Detail.
  • Main business contacts with blank industry: The count and percentage Main Business contacts missing both NAICS and SIC codes. This also populates from the Contact Detail.

Opportunity Pipeline Overview

Opportunity Pipeline Overview for Principal/Owner

The Opportunity Pipeline Overview dashboard focuses on prospects and leads being entered into the agency’s system. Opportunities are displayed by the monetary value, client count, and policy count of open opportunities in the pipeline for the selected period. The default time period is 90 days, but you can update the range as desired. You can also view based on a single employee or the agency as a whole.

Pulse Dashboard for Principal/Owner

Applied Epic Dashboard - Principal/Owner Pulse Dashboard

As the default dashboard, the Pulse Dashboard provides a direct line of sight into your agency’s performance. While the data appears here in a summary capacity, it can be expanded upon by visiting any of the role’s other dashboards. Set your Monetary Option (Estimated, Annualized, or Billed) and then Premium or Commission to start the analysis. Criteria can also be set to filter structure.

The following areas make up the Pulse Dashboard for Principal/Owner:

  • Prior Month Sales: Sum of policies with at least one active line of business.
  • Prior month Commission/premium retention: Measures the prior month’s Retention percentage. For a policy to be retained, it must have at least one retained line. A line is retained if it is in effect on the last day and has at least one prior term.
    • Premium/Commission Retention % = [Sum of premium/commission on retained policies / (Sum of premium/commission on previous term of retained policies + Sum of premium/commission on not retained policies)]*100.
  • Total Transaction Revenue: Total Revenue for transactions with an accounting month in the current calendar month.
  • Carrier Overview (last 90 days): The premium by carrier for the top five carriers in the last 90 days, broken down by policy status.
  • Carrier Trends (last 90 days): The total of the specified monetary measure for the top 5 carriers in the last 90 days.
    • Total Premium/Commission = new + rewritten + (renewed – rewritten)
  • Trend: Claim type (last 12 months): The trend in claim volume for the top 5 claim types over the last 12 months, based on each open claims date of loss.
  • Won opportunities summary: The count of opportunities closed as “Won” in the last 90 days and the total monetary amount.
  • Opportunity pipeline summary: The count of opportunities in the pipeline and the total monetary amount and policy count they represent. This is based on open opportunities with a target close date in the next 90 days.
  • Prior month commission by type of business: The breakdown of the previous months billed commission by account type.

Risk Map

Applied Epic Dashboards Risk Map

The Risk Map is identical to the Risk Map found on other roles’ Dashboards. Data is pulled from ACORD forms and Custom forms.

  • Risk Map: An interactive Google map of risks within the agency’s book of business. Zoom in or out and click on the map pin to identify the client(s) and policies in that location.
  • Risk Details: A list of all in-effect policies in your agency’s book of business.

Sales Overview

Sales Overview on the Principal/Owner Dashboard

As the Principal/Owner of an agency, it’s important to keep track of your agency’s sales performance. Key criteria options on this dashboard include selecting between premium or commission and the monetary option (estimated, annualized, or billed). The tiles featured are:

  • Producer
  • Department
  • Branch
  • New client
  • Lost client

These tiles allow you to see who is the driving force of your agency’s sales. Clicking on any of the graphs provides detail of which clients make up that total. The data in the Department, Branch, New client, and Lost client tiles are generated from the policy detail. The Producer tile data is generated from the Pr/Br commission tab of line detail.

Transaction Analysis

Transaction Analysis Dashboard for Principals and Owners

Also available on the Accountant Dashboard menu, the Transaction Analysis dashboard provides various ways to see the details that make up your agency’s revenue. The key criteria for this dashboard is the Period Type. Select between Transaction Effective Date or Accounting Month.

The following tiles are featured in this dashboard:

  • Total Transaction Revenue: The total transaction revenue for the selected time period made up of Account Current, Direct Bill, Fees, Late Charges, and Misc transaction classes.
  • Revenue by transaction class: The pie chart breaks down revenue by transaction class (Account Current, Direct Bill, Fees, and Miscellaneous Defined Categories). Click on the chart for a detailed list of revenue amounts by class.
  • Revenue trend: Displays the change in revenue over time during the selected time period.
  • Revenue by account: Provides total revenue per client sorted from highest to lowest.
  • Revenue by Pr/Br: Breaks down revenue by producer/broker and lists them from highest to lowest revenue by Pr/Br.
  • Revenue by policy type and status: Investigate revenue by policy type and status. One of the columns lists the revenue by policy type from highest to lowest. Another column breaks out New and Renewed revenue by policy type.
  • Revenue by PPE & policy status: Features a column listing the total revenue by PPE by highest to lowest, and a column breaking out New and Renewed revenue by PPE.
  • Revenue by various structures: The bottom row of tiles lets you view the revenue by your agency’s structure (agency, branch, department, and profit center). This is incredibly helpful if you have multiple agencies configured in your Applied Epic system and need to see which branch, department, or profit center within those agencies are driving the most revenue.

In any of the tiles, clicking on the links takes you to a more detailed view of the data behind the scenes. The data in each tile is generated from the Transactions area.

Won Opportunities

This dashboard provides an overview of the opportunities with a status of “Won” during a specified period. The graph displays the number of opportunities won and their corresponding monetary value, which can be viewed as Estimated Premium or Estimated Revenue, along with the sales team/owners who drive activity. Additionally, it includes a hyperlinked list of clients, allowing direct access to their accounts.
